Hero in his home town

Melbourne MC Phrase is coming to Canberra next week.

MELBOURNE MC Phrase is something of a hero in his home town.

The winner in 2007 of both the Urban Music Awards’ Best Hip Hop Single and Best Video Clip, for “Hold On,” he has successfully survived a period of serious behavioural problems during his teen years.

He has also worked for Victoria’s Reach youth foundation (www.reach.org.au/) founded in 1994 by former AFL Brownlow medallist Jim Stynes and film director Paul Currie, to help achieve self belief for young people.

Credited with having built his own state-of-the-art home studio, Phrase, born Harley Webster has enjoyed a career that has seen him gradually moving from hip-hop and garage to tuneful rock.

Now in a national tour presented by presented by Triple J, Tone Deaf and Street Press Australia, Phrase is due to hit Canberra’s Transit Bar on October 13 with a show featuring tracks from his third album, “Babylon” as well as songs from his back catalogue. It’s been praised as a “soulful, edgy” album and phrase will tour it with a full live band.

Phrase has produced two albums, “Talk with Force,” which was picked up by Universal Music in 2005. In 2009, Phrase released his second album “Clockwork,” which reached number 26 on the ARIA albums chart, as well as several spinoff singles.

All eyes are on his new album, in which guest artists include Jimmy Barnes, Davey Lane, Alex Burnett, Guineafowl, the Preachers and wife Jane Doe.

Phrase says “Babylon” is not really a hip hop album, but rather “an album with rap in it.”

Phrase and band are at Transit Bar, Akuna Street, on Thursday October 13.
