Hospital to get sterile centre

By Hannah Dreher

A NEW sterilisation facility at Canberra Hospital is expected to be built by early 2014, replacing the existing facility in Mitchell.

The ACT Government will open the tender process tomorrow to find the principal consultant to design the new facility, to be built on the Canberra Hospital campus, close to the operating theatres and medical imaging.

Sterilising and disinfecting of medical and surgical instruments is an important part of the hospital’s hygiene and plays an essential role in minimising the rates of infection.

“The development of the new facility will allow sterilisation and disinfection of medical and surgical instruments and equipment on the campus and will enhance the Sterilising Services Department’s ability to transfer sterile supplies to the Operating Suite in a safe and efficient manner,” Chief Minister and Minister for Health Katy Galagher said.

The request for tender for the principal consultant to design the new facility will be advertised tomorrow, Saturday December 10.

Following a period of evaluation the contract is expected to be awarded in early 2012. Construction of the new facility is expected to commence by early 2013 and be completed by early 2014.
