Laughs with a punchy message

Brendan Kelly is Captain Clam.

FEROCIOUSLY handsome Captain Clam is a figment of the imagination – but whose  imagination? Schoolboy Petie’s? His big sister Joanne’s? The teacher Ms. Willowbark? Or their mum’s?

Maybe that’s never fully resolved in this  witty, one-hour romp for young children, but that’s because director/writer Mico is really suggesting that only people with a lively sensibility can appreciate an interesting character such as Clam.

The small cast is experienced, the costumes by Christine Pawlicki are  lots of fun and the set, by Andrew Hackwill, is a workable representation of a Tuggeranong boy’s bedroom.

Mico’s script gets plenty of laughs from the little ones, but nevertheless conveys a punchy message about sibling rivalry and  the stultifying aspects of a computer society.
