Man attacks police

A  27-year-old Chifley man put a police officer in a headlock and repeatedly punched him in the face this morning during a search of the man.

The incident happened around 2am in Fyshwick where police were doing a patrol.

Police said the officers saw a damaged white Mazda 626, stopped in the middle of Gladstone Street.  A man attended the vehicle and spoke to the officers.

Police said information obtained from the owner of the vehicle indicated that the vehicle was possibly stolen, and the man was taken into custody for questioning.

While officers were conducting a search of the man, he violently grabbed one officer in a headlock and punched him numerous times in the face.

Police used capsicum spray to control the man who was then arrested for assaulting police.

The officer was taken to The Canberra Hospital, sustaining a number of facial injuries and a suspected broken hand.

The man was taken to  at the ACT Watch House, where a quantity of substances, suspected to be methylamphetamine, were located.

The man faces the ACT Magistrates Court this morning.
