Obama comes to Canberra

AFTER two previous attempts to visit Australia, the White House has announced US President Barack Obama will visit our shores on November 16-17 as part of the 60th anniversary of the ANZUS alliance – a critical part of the security of the Asia-Pacific region.

The visit, on invitation from Prime Minister Julia Gillard, will follow the APEC Leaders Meeting to be hosted by President Obama in Hawaii.

In a release from the White House, officials said the APEC meeting, “will provide the two leaders an opportunity to build on the APEC agenda and expand bilateral cooperation to increase global economic growth, trade and jobs.”

After his Australian visit he will take part in the East Asia Summit to be held in Bali, Indonesia.

“The President looks forward to consulting closely with the Prime Minister on global and regional issues in preparation for the East Asia Summit to be held later that week in Bali, Indonesia,” the statement said.
