Open day at the memorial’s Mitchell store

THE Australian War Memorial’s newest acquisition, an Australian-built CAC Sabre jet, will be on display on Sunday as part of the “Big Things in Store” open day.

The Sabre fighter, was the RAAF’s premier fighter type during the late ’50s and early ’60s. The fighter, which served with the RAAF for 11 years from 1958 was based at Butterworth in Malaysia.

According to the AWM, the aircraft was part of an RAAF Sabre force that carried out patrol and interception duties during the later stages of the Malaya emergency and throughout the Indonesian “confrontation”.

It now forms part of the Qantas collection at the AWM.

Also on display, is the Lockhead Hudson Mark IV Bomber, De Havilland Tiger Moth, a V2 rocket, a Centurion tank, a prototype “Bushmaster” as used in Afghanistan and a First World War Mk IV Female Tank.

“Big Things in Store” Australian War Memorial open day at the Australian War Memorial Technology Centre, 8 Callan Street, Mitchell from 10am to 3pm. Closed, flat footwear is recommended. Entry by gold coin donation.
