Pru portrait makes finals

NEWS is to hand that Canberra artist Judi Power Thomson’s portrait of  Pru Goward, MP, has been selected as a finalist in the $18,000 Portia Geach Memorial Award  awarded each year for “the best portrait painted from life of some man or woman distinguished in Art, Letters or the Sciences by any female artist resident in Australia”.  Which of the three, we wonder, applies to Goward?

The 90cmx120cm painting is titled “Trusted Friend”, in reference to the silky rooster in the background. Power Thomson says: “In politics, you never know who you can trust.”

The last time “CityNews” published a portrait by this artist, it was her impression of composer Larry Sitsky. That won the Brindabella Art Prize in 2008 and second prize in the Shirley Hannan National Portrait Awards. It was recently gifted to  the Larry Sitsky Recital room at the ANU School of Music.
