Puppets, sluts and sex!

SUPA productions director Garrick Smith isn’t coy about the notorious sex scene in the “Sesame Street” spoof “Avenue Q”, coming soon to the ANU Arts Centre.

It’s amazing how realistic these glove-and-stick puppets can become, partly achieved by having double puppets, dressed and undressed. But as he says, the show is not primarily intended for kids, although with parental supervision they may attend.

“I’ve been in the theatre for 35 years but I’ve never directed puppets before, Smith tells me.

“But Amy Dunham and Max Gambale have both worked with puppets at Questacon and there are three real human beings in the show, so it’s all right.”

Other than that, it’s an experienced cast playing acting, singing, dancing and manipulating one or two rods for the arms.

Take Christine Forbes, fresh from playing the doomed Mrs Johnstone in the tragic Willy Russell musical “Blood Brothers”, who has turned into Lucy the Slut.

“Avenue Q”, ANU Arts Centre, September 16-October 1. Bookings to 6247 4222.
