QBN’s popularity grows

QUEANBEYAN continues to be one of NSW’s fastest growing cities.

According to figures from the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, Queanbeyan’s labour market has grown by more than 2000 workers in the past 12 months and the city’s unemployment rate has dropped by 1 per cent.

Queanbeyan Mayor Cr Tim Overall said Queanbeyan’s unemployment rate has been on the way down for some time while its population is growing at a rate faster than most other regional centres.

“The figures released by the Department show that Queanbeyan’s labour force has increased from 22,723 in March 2010 to 24,936 in March 2011,” he said. “The pleasing figure to come out of this report is that our unemployment rate has fallen from 2.4 per cent to 1.4 per cent during that period.”

Queanbeyan’s unemployment rate is well below the national and NSW average of 5.1 per cent and the ACT at 3.2 per cent.

The figures of other regional cities of similar size are:  Wagga Wagga (5.1 per cent), Albury (8 per cent) and Tamworth (5.5 per cent).

“Obviously a lot of Queanbeyan’s residents travel across the border to the ACT for employment, but in recent years Queanbeyan has become a very popular place to work with people travelling from places such as Braidwood, Goulburn and Yass for work,” Cr Overall said.

“Googong will ultimately become home to 16,000 residents and will deliver a lot of employment opportunities during the construction phase.

“This is a very exciting time to be living in Queanbeyan.”
