Reclaiming the night

At last year's Reclaim the Night protest in Garema Place.

WOMEN — and men that support them — will have the opportunity to take part in the Reclaim the Night global protest against sexual violence on Friday October 28 in Garema Place.

Presented by the ACT Women’s Service Network, Reclaim the Night, is about coming together and demanding the right to feel safe in public places and demand an end to the fear and reality of rape and violence.

The event first began 40 years ago in the UK in response to police advice to stay indoors at the time of the “Yorkshire ripper”.

“Reclaim the Night continues today as a celebration of women’s strength and our collective solidarity, and a pilgrimage for many survivors of sexual violence,” Canberra Rape Crisis Centre executive officer Chrystina Standford says.

“It is also a reminder that women have the right to walk alone and be safe both in public and private spaces”.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, sexual violence affects almost one in five Australian women.

Canberra’s Reclaim the Night protest will also include an installation created by local artist Helani Laisk, a barbecue, speakers and music.

Reclaim the Night in Garema Place at 6.30pm on Friday October 28. Reclaim the Night is the opening event of the ACT Women’s Services Network Summer of Respect campaign that runs until International Women’s day, March 8.
