Salvos up for world award

THE SALVOS will go up against some of the world’s biggest retailers at this year’s Oracle World Retail Awards.

The Salvos Stores are nominated for the Responsible Retailer of the Year. Also in the category is UK retail giant Marks and Spencers – which has a revenue of  £9.7 billion, the third biggest home-improvement retailer in the world, Kingfisher, which has 900 stores in eight countries.

The Salvos Stores have slashed plastic-bag usage by more than three million, decreased electricity consumption by 20 per cent and reduced the amoung of waster being sent to landfill by the stores by 75 per cent. Plus all profit goes to Salvation Army programs.

“We’re just thrilled to be a finalist and to go up against the big guns of Marks and Spencer, the Coop Cooperative, Kingfisher PLC and others is a privilege and an honour,” Salvos Stores general manager Neville Barrett said.

“It’s a clear reflection of just how far Salvos Stores have come. Every cent of profit we raise helps The Salvation Army with critical programs helping people in need – whether it’s supporting the homeless, families in need, addiction recovery support and more.”

Salvos Stores started in the 1880s to help poor people with clothing and assisting their children.

“Today in the Eastern Territory (covering NSW, QLD and the ACT) there are 106 stores. We serve over four million people a year. We get customers from all walks of life,” he said.

The awards ceremony will be held on Tuesday, September 27 in Berlin.
