Seniors’ rent boost

SENIORS can now live in new homes with rent 25 per cent below the market rate as part of a new rental scheme from the ACT Government.

Approximately 80 homes will be available for the rental scheme that will target people who receive the aged pension and currently live in a private rental in the ACT.

The homes, constructed as part of the Federal Government’s economic stimulus package, are located close to public transport, community services, shops and health facilities in Belconnen, Tuggeranong and Western Creek areas. The two-bedroom villas were specifically constructed with six-star energy efficiency ratings and designed to adapt to aging tenants.

ACT Minister for Community Services Joy Burch said not only did the scheme give senior tenants the chance to enjoy rents a quarter below the market, but was designed so tenants were still eligible for Commonwealth rent assistance to further reduce their rent.

“Since 2009, this government has overseen the construction of more than 200 public houses specifically designed for older Canberrans and now with this new affordable rental scheme, we are assisting those in the private rental market,” she said.

People interest in the initiative are to call the Community Services Directorate on 6207 1146.
