Shelter’s love-sick dogs

By Rafiqa Fattah

DOMESTIC Animal Services are urging dog owners to desex their pets after they recorded a number of incidents of dogs running away from home in pursuit of playmates.

Julie Angove, acting registrar of Domestic Animal Services said their shelter was recently busy with a number of sexually entire dogs being lost or looking for love.

“Desexing your pet is important if owners are not legitimate breeders,” she said.

“Not only does it reduce a dog’s desire to roam looking for a partner, but it reduces aggressive behaviour and the number of unwanted pets that end up in shelters or are abandoned.”

In the ACT, it is compulsory to desex dogs and cats that were born after June 21, 2002. Owners who don’t desex their pets and have no permit to keep sexually entire animals can be fined up to $5000.

Ms Angove also reminds dog owners that it is compulsory for dog owners to register and microchip their dog and to keep their dogs contained within premises.

Domestic Animal Services provides a microchipping service for $30.

To report roaming dogs contact Domestic Animal Services at 13 22 81.
