Stanhope, ALP for life

Former Chief Minister Jon Stanhope will be made a life member of the ALP on the weekend.

JON Stanhope will be made a life member of the ALP on the weekend at the annual conference for the ACT branch Australian Labor Party.

Mr Stanhope will join three other members of the ACT Branch to be awarded a life membership.

During his time in office, Mr Stanhope implemented the ACT Bill of Rights, the Human Rights Act, and the ACT’s first elected indigenous body.

Branch president Garrett Purtill said: “Jon has been an outstanding Chief Minister over the past decade and has been a very decent leader of our Party who has always promoted true Labor values of equity, fairness and opportunity.”

Mr Stanhope will be the 30th person to be awarded life membership of the ACT Labor Party since it was founded as a separate branch in 1973.
