QUEANBEYAN’s Heather McKay Indoor Sports Centre officially opened today. The centre, which opened for competition last month, was named after champion squash player Heather McKay – who was born and bred in Queanbeyan.
Mayor Tim Overall said he was pleased to present the Queanbeyan community with a great facility which will be well used.
“Heather McKay is one of Queanbeyan’s greatest ever sports persons and she deserves to be honoured with the naming of this Indoor Sports Centre,” Overall said.
Queanbeyan City Council agreed in February to name the centre after champion squash player.
Situated in Taylor Park, the new indoor sports centre forms one party of a sporting precinct in the area. The facility includes two multi-purpose indoor sports courts, spectator viewing areas and a kiosk with outdoor seating. It also became the new home of the Queanbeyan Sporting Hall of Fame which was previously housed in the Queanbeyan Conference Centre.
