The Man from Musicals!

David McCallum.

THERE was probably a time when the name David McCallum was a nice, decent, ordinary name, but Canberra’s latest hot star of musicals, (yes) David McCallum wasn’t born then and so he must contend with jokes about  the TV star of the same name who appeared in the ’60s television series “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” and now as “Dr Ducky” in NCIS.

“Our” David McCallum is an entirely different person. He  recently took the local musicals scene by storm  when he played the lead role of Jesus in “Jesus Christ Superstar” at the Q in Queanbeyan earlier this year, drawing unprecedented accolades from Citynews reviewer Bill stephens, who described him as “extraordinary….an exceptional singer/actor, his passionate, charismatic performance dominates the stage.”

His new fans assumed he had  come from nowhere, but that’s rarely the case in the performing arts. In fact long before arriving in Canberra for family reasons several years ago, McCallum had won  “Red Faces” on “Hey, Hey It’s Saturday” back in 1997,  toured as a singer  with John Farnham and Phil Emmanuel tour, and worked as a support act for INXS.

I think moving to Canberra, he found an expedient way to balance successful business practice with his singing career and founded the cleaning service “The Cleaning Surgeon.” Some of this will be revealed in his  coming one-man show “An Evening with David McCallum,” where he will perform a mixture of modern songs and show tunes.

“An Evening with David McCallum”, Teatro Vivaldi, ANU Arts Centre, October 27. Dinner and show from 7pm, $70-$90; show Only 8.30pm. $40  Bookings to 6257 2718.
