Thurling out for the season

CANBERRA Raiders’ player Trevor Thurling has been ruled out for the season leading up to this weekend’s game against the Warriors in NZ.

Thurling’s ruptured Achilles tendon sees Josh Miller and Joe Picker back on the bench. Joel Thompson’s fitness will be assessed this week after suffering from a concussion in the game against the Dragons. He is expected to play on Sunday.

Raiders Coach David Furner said the win against the Dragons was a good one for the side, but realised there was another huge challenge this weekend against the Warriors.

“I was pleased with the way the side played in the second half last night and to keep a side like the Dragons to one point in the second half showed the character of the side,” Furner said.

“This week we face a Warriors team that’s in great form and they have size and speed in the backs and plenty of muscle up front.”

Furner said although he was disappointed to lose Thurling for the season, there’s now the chance for another player to come back into the side and impress.

“I’m gutted for Trev as he’s been great for us recently and he had worked so hard on getting himself back into the team and into form,” he said.

“It gives a guy like Josh Miller or Joe Picker the chance to come back this week and I know they would be both keen to make an impact after missing out on the Dragons win.”
