Artist with a summery vision

Infinity

Paintbox Fine Art in Braddon has chosen an artist with a summery outlook to exhibit this November. Waterside settings, lighthouses, beaches, sporting fields and stylised impressions of the outdoor world dominate the paintings of James Willebrant.

Willebrant graduated from The National Art School Sydney in 1972, having been awarded the National Art School Painting Prize in 1970 and 1972.

In 1973 he was encouraged by his mentor Charles Blackman to mount his first exhibition to mount his first exhibition at The Philip Bacon Galleries in Brisbane. Thirty-eight years and more than 70 exhibitions throughout Australia and overseas, he’s still going.

His work features in major private, public and corporate collections including The National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of NSW and Queensland Art Gallery, many regional galleries, Parliament House Collection, Australia-Japan Trade Commission, Sydney Theatre Company, Qantas, Australian Embassy Tokyo, Artbank, Australian Stock Exchange, Deutsche Bank and several major university collections.

Willebrant and his contemporaries such as Brett Whiteley, Tim Storrier, John Coburn, Martin Sharpe and John Firth-Smith redefined, explored and celebrated the Australian spirit. His idiosyncratic response has seen the development of a unique style and vision, which is immediately recognisable.

James Willebrant, Paintbox Fine Art 32 Lonsdale Street, Braddon, open 11am-5pm Wednesday-Sunday, until November 27.
