A BARBECUE unit from the park at Murray’s Corner on Paddy’s River Road was stolen on the weekend.
It will cost the ACT Government an estimated $20,000 to replace the double barbecue unit, hot plates, electronic system, batteries and gas bottles that were stolen.
“It is incredibly disappointing that people continue to go out into our parks and urban open spaces maliciously destroying or stealing our recreation facilities,” Territory and Municipal Services rural district manager Brett McNamara said.
“Murray’s Corner has always been a popular spot for family and friends to gather and relax and with the weather warming up, picnic facilities become increasingly in demand by the community.
“Unfortunately this is the second time we have experienced this type of vandalism whereby barbeque facilities have been physically removed.”
Mr McNamara said staff regularly monitor urban parks, reserves and playgrounds to prevent damage but the public were also encouraged to remain vigilant.
He said TAMS was working closely with ACT Policing on the matter.
