A dream (home) comes true

WITH the wardrobe of every girl’s dreams and a “boys-only” rumpus room complete with well-stocked bar and flat-screen TVs, Mark and Hieu Taylor’s Forde home ticks all the boxes for the couple who knew exactly what they were looking for.

“After viewing a few houses, we decided to build our dream home because we realised we weren’t likely to find it unless we designed it ourselves,” says Hieu.

“We looked at display homes for inspiration, but we already knew how many rooms we wanted, and how we wanted the house to feel – spacious and airy with high ceilings.

“Our architect helped us with the orientation, so that it all came together logically and so that we had this lovely indoor-outdoor flow.

“The result is exactly what we wanted.”

The light, bright living area features skylights for an open feel, a large modular sofa, rough-hewn, chunky dining table and a gorgeous kitchen with glass green splashbacks, endless bench space and open timber shelves to add character and warmth.

“I love the space in here, and the kitchen is a dream to cook in,” says Hieu.

But she says the highlight of the home for her is the girl-heaven, walk-in wardrobe.
“I’ve always wanted a wardrobe this size, with plenty of shoe storage,” she says of the Carrie Bradshaw-like space.

“It actually helps me save money, because I can see all my clothes and bags at a glance – I don’t feel the need to do as much shopping!

“It’s also easy to keep everything tidy, because you can put things back in their place straight away. It’s very practical.”

Although it’s primarily Mark’s domain, Hieu says she also loves the upstairs rumpus area, which overlooks the entrance hall and stunning silver chandelier.

“I don’t like to admit that I like the ‘man cave’, because the intention was that it would be Mark’s space,” she says.

“But it’s very cosy upstairs and we often hang out there in winter.”
