THE rural fire service and police are the two organisations Canberrans trust the most.

The findings are part of the latest results from Grey Canberra’s “Eye on Canberra” survey, conducted as part of the national “Eye on Australia” survey, which looked at how much Canberrans trust a range of organisations, professions and industry categories.

“It seems there’s something about a uniform that Canberrans trust, with major charities such as the Salvation Army also benefiting from the increase in trust, moving up the scale to be in front of the ABC and Google,” Grey Canberra general manager Warren Apps said.

“While the ACT Government improved on last year’s results, we still trust beer companies more, putting them on par with legal professionals.

“And in a somewhat surprising result considering the BP disaster last year, petrol or oil companies have actually moved up the scale.”

The survey found, Bunnings and hardware stores are still more trusted than department stores and supermarkets, while real estate agents have moved further down the scale now being less trusted than ACT and federal politicians.

And confidence in sporting bodies such as the AFL and NRL also continues to decline, as does our faith in telcos and insurance companies.

The research also saw Canberrans tend to trust local organisations more than their national competitors with Canberra-based organisations out-performing their categories in terms of trust.

“Then at the bottom of the scale is advertising agencies,” Mr Apps said.

“So perhaps we need to look into adopting a uniform.”
