Students reach out through art

"Nyasha"

You must get along to see the work of Year 11 & 12 students from seven colleges in the Belconnen region in the “College Express 2011” exhibition at Belconnen Arts Centre. I’ve just seen it and can speak of the sheer originality of the work on show.

You can see photography, painting, drawing, and ceramics, textiles, and design technology and although the gallery breaks for Christmas, “College Express 2011” runs until Sunday January 15.

The show is a survey of Year 11 and Year 12 work from seven north-west Canberra colleges – Gungahlin, Hawker, Radford and St Francis Xavier Colleges, Burgmann Anglican School, Melba Copland Secondary School and UC Secondary College Lake Ginninderra. The exhibition is a partnership between Belconnen Arts Centre and the education sector and forms part of the community outreach program of the Arts Centre.

This is the third annual “College Express” exhibition and in it the young artists explore the world around them.

Curator Jacque Schultze says, “selecting the work has been a positive experience for me as a curator. I have watched the students’ work develop over the past months, and to see the final outcome is quite exciting. The visual art teachers have worked intensely with their students to produce quality engaging artworks with a strong visual impact.”

“College Express 2011” at Belconnen Arts Centre, 118 Emu Bank, Belconnen, 10am to 5pm, Tuesday – Sunday. Christmas closing December 23, reopens January 10 with exhibition open until December 15.
