YOU’D be quite wrong if you thought the Tuggeranong Arts Centre had gone into hibernation while major renovations are being undertaken.

On the contrary, after relocating temporarily to the Tuggeranong Hyperdome and the old Nolan Gallery building at Lanyon, it is all go, especially with a touch of Latino fire and passion for the late spring.

One part of it is “Primavera 2012”, a big Latin festival to be staged as part of the Tuggeranong Festival this weekend.

The street carnival in Tuggeranong town’s centre will include live music, amusements, markets, food stalls and a performance by a group of Garran Primary students that have been learning Cuban Salsa rhythms for the occasion with the support of the Cuban embassy staff and the Kokoloco dance studio.

As well, there’s a celebration of the project “Globalising Friendship”, the first stage of a cultural exchange between Australia and Cuba.

More than 200 Australian children’s artworks will be on display in Havana’s part of a cultural exchange project involving 1,000 primary students from Cuba and Australia and Cuba, where, we hear, La Colmenita (The Beehive), a famous Cuban children’s theatre company, has launched the exhibition.

“Globalising Friendship” is a project developed by Tuggeranong Arts Centre, the Embassy of Cuba,GarranPrimary Schooland the Tuggeranong Hyperdome that explores the similarities and differences betweenAustraliaandCubathrough the artwork of children.

500 children from Garran Primary  School participated in the project and 250 of their works were sent to Havana to be exhibited at Casa Osvaldo Guayasamín, one of the most important art galleries in Cuba.

The remaining 250, together with 250 artworks created across Cuba, will be on display around the Tuggeranong Hyperdome Shopping Mall from this Thursday, November 22 to December 14.

Felipe Bernabó, the arts officer at Tuggeranong Arts Centre says, “Globalising Friendship and Primavera 2012 are two great examples of what can be achieved when community, government, diplomatic and private sectors join their efforts towards a common objective”.

Pedro Monzón, Ambassador of Cuba says, “besides having commercial relations across the globe, countries should also concentrate on exchanging culture and arts.”
