ONE of Canberra’s best-known designer jewellers has created a unique pendulum clock, now installed in the Office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
The “Always Clock” has been handcrafted by Israeli-Australian jeweller Eytan Aharoni, using the Japanese metal forging technique of Mokume-Gane, to articulate his views on “the relationship between time and the society, land and parliament of Australia.”
The clock has been crafted from over a quarter-kilo of gold, using a technique developed in 17th-century Japan, where different metals are fused together to produce unique colour and shape combinations.
Mr Aharoni, who came to Canberra some years ago and, with his wife Nurit, runs a jewellery shop in Bunda Street, Civic, said he believed it was the only pendulum clock ever made using this technique.
Among his other striking creations in the past has been the “Sydney Opera House Ring,” inspired by and dedicated to the late Joern Utzon.
The face of the “Always Clock” consists of a map of Australia, surrounded by a solid “Mokume-Gane” frame and pink diamonds, while the pendulum features a representation of Parliament House swinging from left to right, and right to left.
Mr Aharoni commented, “The Always Clock tells the story of my personal experience and perspective ofAustralia as an immigrant: its beautiful landscapes, its diverse and welcoming society, its natural wealth and its democratic political process.”
