Asbestos school to be refurbished

TAYLOR Primary School, that was closed earlier this year due to asbestos, has been promised $12.9 million from the ACT Government for upgrades.

“The Government will ensure Taylor Primary students, parents and staff enjoy a renewed, modernised and safe high-quality school,” Minister for Education and Training Chris Bourke said.

“We will upgrade or replace the school’s core infrastructure and remove all material containing asbestos from the school. This will ensure the children can enjoy a revitalised and safe school.

Dr Bourke said the upgrade and refurbishment should begin as soon as possible so the school is ready in time for the 2014 school year.

Students and staff from Taylor School were relocated to the nearby Namadgi School.

“I thank them for their perseverance and understanding,” Dr Bourke said of Namadgi School.

“The community of Kambah has stuck together admirably to deal with the issue at Taylor Primary.

“I also ask the two school communities to continue to share the Namadgi School campus for the next 18 months until the renewed Taylor School site is ready. This ensures the least disruption to the Taylor school community and utilises the spare capacity of Namadgi School before it takes on senior classes.

“Taylor Primary will continue to operate as a separate school on the Namadgi School campus for the remainder of this year and the next. We will continue to maintain Taylor Primary School’s identity while the Taylor site is being remediated and upgraded.”
