Award ‘coup’ for Canberra

FOR the first time in nearly 30 years, Canberra will host the Walkley Awards for Excellence in Journalism gala dinner at Parliament House on Friday, November 30.

The awards will adopt a Centenary of Canberra theme, says Chief Minister Katy Gallagher.

“The Walkley Awards is the most prestigious event for Australia’s media industry and to be able to bring it to Canberra, together with hundreds of our leading journalists and media movers and shakers, is a tremendous coup for Canberra,” the Chief Minister said.

The Walkley Awards were last held in Canberra in 1984.

After a long association with the Walkley Awards, and the winner of a Gold Walkley in 2010, Laurie Oakes said Canberra, was an appropriate choice of venue for the 2012 Awards because it recognised the importance of journalism in Australia’s political history.

“Journalists have a responsibility to provide voters with the information they need to make proper judgments at election time. It’s also part of our job to transmit signals from the electorate clearly and accurately to politicians. And we have an obligation to hold to account those in positions of political power,” Mr Oakes said.

“So it’s appropriate that this year the Walkleys are going into the political equivalent of the lions’ den, and we thank the Centenary of Canberra for their support.”
