“WIND Air Water” is Belconnen Arts Centre’s way of signalling the advent of World Environment Day on June 5, one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment by giving a human face to environmental issues.

With this in mind, and inspired by the exhibition at the centre, “From Folk Art to High Art – how the kite became an art form”, the centre has engaged kite designer Peter Travis and kite maker Michael Richards of Kite Magic to bring the community together to make, decorate and fly kites on the shore of Lake Ginninderra.

Individuals and families are invited to fly their own kites or buy a kite designed by Kite Magic and decorate it.

Groups can pre-purchase and decorate a large Rokkoku kite and already community based groups, including The Bungee Program at Belconnen Community Services and Westpac Belconnen Team, have decorated several of these, to be flown during the day.

Maximus the Magnificent will be the MC for the event and families are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch though Black Pepper Café and Vietnamese Pho Viet restaurant as well as the Arts Centre’s kiosk will also be open for refreshments.

Visitors can also view the kite exhibition in the Arts Centre main gallery. Exhibiting artist Peter Travis is also artist-in-residence at the Arts Centre during his exhibition.

This free event will proceed rain or shine—inside the Arts Centre if it is wet.
