YOU have only until the weekend to catch “Look! The art of Australian picture books today,” a touring exhibition of artworks from Australia’s top children’s book illustrators at Canberra Museum and Gallery.
“CityNews” has visited the exhibition and can testify to the delight of young children as they view the colourful, imagination and often plain quirky illustrations show.
Created by the State Library of Victoria, Look! includes 112 artworks by leading Australian illustrators including Shaun Tan, Graeme Base, Bob Graham, Greg Rogers, Ann James, Leigh Hobbs, Ron Brooks and Frané Lessac.
The exhibition displays sketches, drafts, three-dimensional mock-ups, finished artwork and publications as well as multimedia presentations to demonstrate the various stages of developing contemporary Australian picture books that “give imaginations fuel to dream.”
Celebrating the National Year of Reading, 2012, this exhibition encourages and promotes visual literacy in young children, but the gallery is quite sure that adults who haven’t been exposed to the world of picture books since their childhood may be surprised just how sophisticated the art of picture books has become.
They’re promising “images that please, intrigue and surprise.”
