Budget watch: Midwife services for the north

CALVARY Health Care’s new midwife-led model of care for maternity services will get funding as part of the 2012-13 ACT Budget.

According to Chief Minister and Minister for Health, Katy Gallagher, the costs for this initiative will be fully funded and negotiated directly with Calvary Heath Care as the owners and managers of Calvary Public Hospital.

“The Continuity of Midwifery Care (CMC) allows a woman to work in partnership with a midwife for the provision of her care through pregnancy, labour, birth and the postnatal period,” she said.

“Midwives are able to function autonomously as primary care providers, personalising care for each woman and providing referrals to other health professionals as required.

“This model of care is similar to the model that has been offered at Canberra Hospital but we recognise that there is a significant demand on the northside of Canberra, and women and midwives have asked me to look at funding a CMC on the northside.

“Despite steadily increasing population growth rates in Gungahlin, Hall, Belconnen and some of the inner north suburbs no such service has been provided on the northside before.”
