Coloured perspex shines as art

John Nicholson Site Map 2011 plastic, plywood, dimensions variable
THE coolest gallery in Civic, David Sequeira’s “Everything Nothing Projects,” which boast “Small Space Big Visions”, is showing recent sculptures and wall pieces by Sydney artist John Nicholson.

Trained in photomedia at the College of Fine Arts in Sydney  in the early nineties, he went on to work  as a prop maker in London at the Barbican Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he fine-tuned his interests in construction and object-making.

For over a decade since that time, Nicholson has been using plastic to explore the optical sensations of light and colour.

Differing shades of Perspex are shaped, glued and bound together, often over plywood forms to create dazzling constructions of striped layers.

In the traditions of minimalism and conceptualism, Nicholson treats colour as a material from which he builds his art.

His work has been included in several surveys of Australian sculpture and is held in many private collections.

“Everything Nothing Projects: John Nicholson”, at Level 1, Center Cinema Building, 29 Bunda Street, Civic (above Academy Nightclub) Sat & Sun 12-5pm and by appointment to 0414 583 723, until June 24.
