WE’RE used to hearing about ANU’s premier fine artists, but the spotlight is rarely turned on our top designers.

A new show at the ANU School of Art includes ANU staff and alumni among the exhibitors. “de sign ed 2” brings together 19 exhibitors from the design arts degree programs and includes pieces from the ceramics, furniture design, glass, gold and silversmithing, sculpture and textile design workshops at the School of Art.

Four of the exhibitors have been shortlisted for this year’s Interior Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) with Jon Goulder shortlisted as Designer of the Year, and Cinnamon Lee, Henry Wilson and Elliot Bastianon shortlisted in the Furniture and Lighting category.

Megan Jackson and Sean Booth are winners of the Canberra 100 Design competition and three artists, Jon Goulder, Henry Wilson and Henry Pilcher, are winners of the Bombay Sapphire Design Awards.

Mathematical whizkid, elite gold and silversmith and design arts co-ordinator, Gilbert Riedelbauch, says: “The School of Art launched this degree as an avenue for students with a strong interest in establishing a sustainable and creative career in their chosen discipline.”

He says students acquire specialised skills in their major discipline, a higher level of information literacy and the application of current digital technologies and fabrication processes.

“The diversity of this model of practice is reflected in the range of objects presented in ‘de sign ed 2.’ The works selected are from graduates and staff, many of who are leaders in their field,” he says.
