Donation helps local cancer group

THE Canberra Lung Cancer and Mesothelioma Support Group

Patient Geoff Dickin, nurse care co-ordinator Judy Rafferty and patient Gay Priest accept the cheque from lawyer Theodora Ahilas.
has received a $3000 funding boost.

The group was formed in November 2010 to provide support to those affected by lung cancer and mesothelioma, as well as their family members and friends.

Up to 28 members attend twice a month, and the cash donation from legal firm Maurice Blackburn will be used to help cover patients’ medical costs.

The program is the brainchild of course co-ordinator and Canberra Hospital nurse Judith Rafferty.

“So many Canberra families are supporting loved ones living with aggressive cancers, and setting up a support group to help people deal with the highs and lows of the illness has been hugely satisfying for me,” she said.

“I felt honoured to receive an award for creating this group, but the real reward comes with receiving positive feedback from members and being allowed to take part in their individual journeys.”

Theodora Ahilas, principal from Maurice Blackburn Lawyers, said she hoped the donation lightened patients’ heavy burden of living with a life-threatening condition.

“We sincerely hope these funds make a positive difference to group members. They travel an incredibly tough road, and it was absolutely humbling to meet and act for people diagnosed with an asbestos related disease and their families,” she said.

The group meets at the Canberra Hospital on the second Tuesday of each month from 11am-1pm.

“It’s important for anyone impacted by illness to have a safe and supportive environment to openly talk about how they’re travelling, share experiences, network and gain information,” Ms Rafferty said.
