Drink swoop nets nine P-platers

POLICE caught 25 drink drivers last week, including nine P-plate drivers and one a six-time drink-driver offender.

Fourteen drivers were issued with immediate suspension notices. Police said the six-time offender is a 59-year-old man from Ainslie, who was detected driving on Dickson Place, in Dickson. His reading was 0.153.

Another high-level drink-driving incident included a 29-year-old woman who was driving on the wrong side of the road along Forbes Street in Turner, about 3am on Sunday April 15.

When police attempted to stop the woman, who was driving a Volkswagen sedan, the car was driven up and over the median strip before stopping. The woman, a Spanish national, returned an alcohol content (AC) reading of 0.199.

Supt Kylie Flower said the consistent number of drink-driving offenders is a continual disappointment to police, as incidents such as the car being driven on the wrong side of the road could easily have resulted in a serious collision.

“The last thing our officers want to attend is a road fatality and these recent results could have easily ended that way. Canberrans need to make the choice to either drink or drive, and to plan ahead about how they intend to get home if they have been drinking,” Supt Flower said.
