Fabric art show a place of ‘spiritual healing’

Fabric designs by Ceretha Skinner.
ARTIST Ceretha Skinner will have her fabric designs featured in an exhibition at Belconnen Community Centre from today as part of NAIDOC week.

Skinner is a 40-year-old woman from the Gumbayngirr tribe who moved from Grafton to Canberra in 1999. Currently she is in a mentorship program at Megalo Art Studios, working closely with director Alison Alder to start her own design business.

“Art has been a medicine to me. A therapy. It helped me build my self-esteem. Art saved my life,” Skinner said.

Her work on the printing of design art on fabric incorporates the flora and fauna of the Clarence River in northeast NSW, which is a spiritual healing place for Skinner “because I was born in Gratton”.

Skinner was nominated for the NAIDOC Week Australian artist of the year in 2011.

The exhibition is now open however the official opening night will be held on Tuesday, July 3 at 6pm. The exhibition will be open Monday-Friday from 9am-4.30pm.
