Failed robber faces court

A 31-year-old Turner man faces court today charged with two attempted aggravated robberies in Braddon over the long weekend.

The first incident was about 8pm on Saturday, when a man entered the 5 Star Supermarket, Braddon, carrying what was believed to be a meat cleaver and demanding money. The offender was challenged by staff and he ran out of the store.

The second incident was about 1.40am this morning, when a man attempted to gain entry to the Caltex Star Market, Braddon, through the front sliding doors. The man allegedly approached the door with a stocking over his face.

About 4am, police patrolling Girrahween Street, Braddon, spotted a man matching the description of the offender. Police arrested and searched the man, finding a meat cleaver protruding from his pocket.

North district Supt Mick Calatzis commended the police response and that of the staff.

“The staff at Caltex should be commended for their quick thinking in deactivating the doors so that the man couldn’t gain entry,” Supt Calatzis said.

The man was charged with two counts of attempted aggravated robbery and going equipped with offensive weapon for theft.
