Feedback needed on ‘speed cushions’

A CALL-OUT for community feedback has begun on the effectiveness of speed cushions on Flinders Way in Griffith.

The speed cushions were installed in May 2011 after Roads ACT responded to residents’ complaints about speeding along the strip of road with an investigation into its traffic conditions.

“The traffic warrant system was used to assess the road’s traffic volumes, speeds and accidents and identified it as a high priority for the installation of traffic calming measures,” Roads ACT director Tony Gill said.

“Roads ACT’s investigation of Flinders Way found a number of major safety issues, including high accident figures, high traffic volumes and excessive speeds.

“The investigation showed that Flinders Way, between Murray Crescent and Mugga Way, carried around 6300 vehicles per day with 15 per cent of motorists travelling at 63 kilometres per hour or more.”

Mr Gill said the excessive speeds were found to be the main cause of accidents along the road, particularly those accidents near intersections.

Roads ACT will now evaluate the effectiveness of the speed cushions through data analysis and community feedback.

A letter about the survey will be delivered to residents living along Flinders Way and affected side streets, and an online survey and post paid forms will be available at Kingston Library or the local shopping centres in Manuka, Griffith and Red Hill. The survey will finish on Friday April 20.
