Feline Fantasy for Free Rain

Janelle McEnamin sings “Memory”.
IF you’re not familiar with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical “Cats”, you might wonder why the cast of Free Rain Theatre’s production headed to Tiny’s Green Shed at the Resource Management Centre in Mugga Lane this morning.

Based on the poems in “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats” by T. S. Eliot, the show is set in a garbage tip on the night of the Jellicle Ball where curious cats come together to celebrate and sing.

Star singer Janelle McEnamin, playing Grizabella the Glamour Cat had the little cats purring as she performed the show’s most famous song, “Memory”, of which the composer’s father, William Lloyd Webber, once said: “It sounds like $5 million!”

Since it opened in 1981, “Cats” has become a favourite all over the world in the production by Trevor Nunn, but in recent years amateur companies have picked up the rights too.

Directed by Cate Clelland with musical director Leisa Keen, this “feline fantasy” is often seen as a dance musical, so choreographer Laura Pearce has been particularly busy grooming her stage felines for what promises to be a spectacular show.

“Cats”, at ANU Arts Centre, July 6-22, bookings to 6275 2700
