JANET Fieldhouse has won the $20,000 main prize at the 2011 Indigenous Ceramic Art Awards.
Fieldhouse, a Canberra-based Torres Strait artist and a CIT cultural arts teacher and coordinator in the Yurauna Centre, won the award for he work called “Tattoo”. The installation uses a light box and transparent porcelain to look at ritual scarification practices in the Torres Strait Islands.
Fieldhouse had also won the award three years ago and the only local artist to have work shown at the National Gallery of Australia’s indigenous ceramic artwork collection.
The Indigenous Ceramic Art Awards is run by the Shepparton Art Museum in Victoria.
