Floriade gets ‘stylish’ in its 25th year

“STYLE and Design” will be the theme of this year’s Floriade, now in its 25th year.

The first bulbs for Floriade were planted at Commonwealth Park today by students from The Woden School and Floriade head gardener Andrew Forster.

This is the third year that students from the Woden School have been involved as part of a work skills program run the school.

Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation, Andrew Barr said the theme “will inspire the unique design of the garden beds and the accompanying entertainment and horticulture program”.

“The festival’s popular night time event, Floriade NightFest, will also return from September 26 to 30, with live entertainment, music, food and wine, night markets, spectacular new lighting and an array of special activities,” he said.

“Floriade is Australia’s premier spring festival and is an event that delivers significant economic and cultural benefits to the Canberra community. That’s why the ACT Labor Government is proud to invest in this great event.

“In 2011 Floriade generated an economic return of $30 million to the ACT and attracted over 410,000 visitors – the second highest attendance figure since the introduction of turnstiles in 1999.

“There was also a record day of attendance, with over 34,400 people attending on the Labour Day public holiday.”

Floriade 2012 runs from Saturday September 15 to Sunday October 14 at Commonwealth Park.
