Floriade ready to bloom

THE sun was out and the flowers were blooming at today’s official launch of Floriade, in what will be the 25th year of the popular flower festival.

The launch, hosted by radio personality Genevieve Jacobs, had guest speakers including celebrity gardner Jamie Durie and fashion designer Leona Edmiston.

In tune with this year’s theme, style and design, Edmiston is the ambassador for Floriade 2012.

She wore a floral dress from her own collection at the launch and was joined by models also sporting floral frocks from her latest collection.

She says she hopes to see many women around Canberra wearing floral patterns to celebrate the festival.

Durie, who designed the gardens for a $120 million housing project Observatory Living in Wright, was showcasing a snapshot version of the design at Floriade.

He says he has been a regular visitor of the event for years, and that Floriade “has set the bar” for other flower festivals around the world.

“I’ll be enjoying tiptoeing amongst the tulips this year,” he says.

This year’s event will include runway shows, style workshops, gardening tips and information sessions on how to grow and prepare seasonal food.

Tourism Minister Andrew Barr said last year’s festival was one of the “biggest we have seen”; attracting more than 412,000 attendees and injecting a record $30 million to the ACT economy.

“There’s something for everyone at Floriade, and I encourage Canberrans to check out what’s on offer and invite their friends and family from interstate,” he says.

Floriade will be open from tomorrow until October 14. For more information on the event schedule visit www.floriadeaustralia.com.
