Forum of young artists for Centenary

Dr Jolanta Gallagher
EIGHT of Australia’s cultural and artistic leaders gathered at the ANU to take the first steps towards organising the country’s first National Forum of Young Artists working in the fields of music, dance, visual art, literature, theatre and film production.

The project director, Dr Jolanta Gallagher, the founder of the Australian Talented Youth Project and staff member of  the ANU School of Music, said the meeting was the first step in a process that aims to engage young people from all around the country in forming artistic networks and having a voice in arts policy.

The meeting had brought together cultural leaders from throughout Australia who have a particular expertise in engaging young people with creative arts.

The participants are Andrew Murray of Arts Hub Australia in Victoria, Jane Tonkin of Corrugated Iron in the NT, Shayne Johnson of NSW’s Beyond Empathy, Monique Douglas of Propel Youth Arts WA, Annemarie Kohn of Carclew Youth Arts in SA, Kelly Drummon-Cawthon of Salamanca Arts Centre in Tasmania, Sarah Keating of Youth Arts Queensland and Philip Piggin of Belconnen Arts Centre.

The forum, to be held in Canberra in January 2013,  is intended to form part of the Canberra’s Centenary Celebrations, and will bring around 80 of Australia’s top artists aged 18-30 to the national capital for a week of discussion, artistic engagement and performance.
