Gallagher promises new regional portfolio

Chief Minister Katy Gallagher says an increase in rates is "a standard practice"
Chief Minister Katy Gallagher.
ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher said she would create a new regional development portfolio if re-elected at the October election.

“My vision is for Canberra to build significantly on its role as the major service centre and economic heart of the south-east in the coming years,” she told a local Property Council lunch.

She said Canberra already effectively fulfilled the role of a regional centre in areas such as the provision of tertiary health services, but she wanted the role to expand.

“I’d like to see us become even more of a destination of choice for tertiary education delivery too. The National Broadband Network creates all kinds of opportunities for service delivery that we’re only just dipping our toes into at the moment,” Gallagher said.

“I’m also exploring with my colleagues, at local-government level, the potential for using our collective muscle and collective buying power to get better value for our investments, regardless of the jurisdictional borders that divide us on the map.

“As we embark on our second century we need to be perceived and recognised as something more than a motel for fly-in fly-out politicians. We need to pursue our own destiny – as a city of 365,000, and as a regional centre for almost twice that number.”
