Grammar science wing wins top award

CANBERRA building company Construction Control has won an MBA award for Canberra Girls Grammar School’s new $13.7 million science wing.

The building won the prize for commercial buildings valued at $10-20 million.

Describing the new building, Construction Control said in its submission: “The main atrium is the highlight feature of the building with extensive glazing and detailed wall panelling. Double-sided display cases are built into the corridor walls visually connecting the laboratories and classrooms.

“All rooms lead out to the two storey atrium with clerestory windows running the full length of the building. The atrium is to be used for student breakout space, casual teaching and for school functions. All of this is combined with some of the best views in Canberra.”

School principal Anne Coutts said the new wing represented one of the largest single investments the school had made in its 85-year history.

“We have replaced 50-year-old facilities with 10 brand new laboratories and an extraordinary Science Foyer to promote everything that will unfold here,” she said.
