Grammar students’ music to play on Carillon

By Tamara Junor

CANBERRA Girls Grammar students will  hear their own compositions played on the National Carillon tomorrow.

The compositions, by year 9 music students, will be played by Lyn Fuller along with one or two popular tunes starting from 9am to 11am.

One of the only four carillonists in Canberra and president of the National Carillon Society, Ms Fuller says that there is a great need to encourage more composition for this national treasure.

“Because of the carillon’s size and its playing technique, the students have had to become acquainted with its characteristics,” she said.

“The carillon is capable of playing a wide range of music, from the very serious to the well-known and popular, appealing to a wide audience.”

Canberra Girls Grammar School director of music Melinda Sawers said: “It is very special to have access to this beautiful instrument and for the students to learn to appreciate it as the concert instrument it is.”
