Greens propose $13.5m boost to paths

THE Greens have announced they plan to triple the number of new pedestrian crossings and apply new laws for learner drivers to better protect pedestrians, motorcyclists and other “vulnerable road users”.

The party launched their Active Transport Package today to take to the election, which proposes a $13.5m boost to fix and upgrade Canberra’s network of paths to promote walking and cycling.

Part of the plan includes a $500,000 commitment to design a cycle highway from Molonglo to Civic and the Parliamentary Triangle, and a Smartphone application to let Canberrans make suggestions about needed works.

“We have some great paths here in Canberra, but if we are to become a world class city for pedestrians and cycling, there’s a lot more to do,” says ACT Greens Active Transport Spokesperson Caroline Le Couteur.

“We also need to continue identifying community spaces, like aged care facilities and childcare centres, where 40km/h zones can be put in place.

“Walking and cycling makes us healthier, saves us money, cuts our pollution and takes the strain off more expensive and polluting parts of the transport system. It’s our role to make that choice easier and safer for more Canberrans.”

The Labor Party says encouraging cycling is a key stance in its Transport for Canberra strategy.

The Canberra Liberals say they will announce a transport policy in the coming months.
