Budget boost for Gungahlin sport

GUNGAHLIN Enclosed Oval will receive $6.5 million for a new grandstand as part of the 2012-13 ACT Budget.

Treasurer and Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation, Andrew Barr made the announcement today, ahead of next Tuesday’s ACT Budget.

According to Mr Barr, the already designed and approved grandstand will provide covered seating for 580 people and open seating for a further 850. The $6.5 million is additional funding to an already allocated $6 million for the enclosed oval.

“The provision of such outstanding sporting facilities will certainly encourage Gungahlin residents to remain active and I look forward to the first ball being bounced, or kicked off,” he said.

The $6.5 million will also provide four team change rooms, two officials’ change rooms, public toilets, a first aid room, kiosk, club room and storage facilities.

Work on the grandstand will start at the end of the year, however work on the oval has already begun. Both are scheduled to be completed by mid 2014.

The enclosed oval is being built at the western end of the Gungahlin Town Centre and adjoins the senior college and leisure centre, forming the major components of Gungahlin’s new leisure precinct.
