Hear it for the Marvellous Mizdemeanours

YOU may imagine that you don’t know the Marvellous Mizdemeanours, but believe me, you do.

Karen Strahan, Gaye Reid, Lisa McClelland, Jill Walsh
All the members, Karen Strahan, Gaye Reid, Lisa McClelland, Jill Walsh have been performing around the traps in Canberra for years, but in different combinations and under different names.

Take Karen Strahan, or Karen Bradley by her married name. She used to perform with the late great Canberra Jazz Singer, Gery Scott, under with her own big band, Sweet Mischief.

Then again, you may have seen our report on the recent CAPO awards and wondered just who it was who’d won the new Macquarie Wealth Award to present an original Australian musical comedy theatre show for 2013 called “Check You Checkin’ Me!” That would have been  Strahan and Walsh, who started writing the “original, Australian musical Broadway show” together two years, pitched the show successfully to Stephen Pike at the Queanbeyan Performing Arts Centre, The Q. Now with the Macquarie award for the set design in hand and Pike directing, it is to be staged in 2013.

Strahan reports that the group of senior friends were “tired of being politically correct,” so formed the Mizdemeanours 18 months ago and have been touring successfully for the past year, with a recent success at the Camelot Lounge in Marrickville.

It’s light music, with not a few “blasts from their marvellous past,” as the girls say.

The Marvellous Mizdemeanours, at The Top Of The Cross, Canberra Southern Cross Club, 92-96 Corinna Street Woden, Friday 21 September 8.30pm show only $23, 6.30pm dinner & show $57, Bookings to 6283 7288 or book online www.cscc.com.au
