Hilal back at Belconnen with Egyptian dance

EGYPTIAN contemporary dance artist Suraya Hilal is taking part in a two week artist in residence period at Belconnen Arts Centre for the  second year running.

Members of the public are invited to see Hilal as choreographer and her dancers working through the creative process at an open rehearsal  in the dance studio on October 5 at 6pm and to stay on for a Q&A session following the open rehearsal.

Community Arts Officer at the centre, Philip Piggin, described Hilal’s practice as “embedded in one of the world’s most ancient and extraordinary cultures – Egypt…it is indeed a rare and unique opportunity to be part of this new journey of dance, so passionately pursued by Suraya and her company members from around Australia.”

We were entranced by the work that came from their residency with us last year, and we very much look forward to the results of their 2012 residency at the Arts Centre.”

An introductory workshop for the general public will run from October 6 – 8, accompanied by live drumming from percussionist Marianthe Loucataris.

Open dance workshops for the public, at Belconnen Arts Centre, 118 Emu Bank, Belconnen, October 6 to 8, 10am to 3pm. Open percussion workshop for the public, 6 October 6, 3.15 to 4.30pm. Cost of dance workshop, $120 per day or $90 per person if you bring a friend.
