VINTAGE patterned sheets from the 1970s are the inspiration behind Oh Mabel – a little linen label by Canberran Sarah Power.

The 32-year-old public servant says she has a challenging and fulfilling career, but wanted to express herself creatively and create a business based on her own strengths.

“I have never been one to do one thing at a time and love that I am busy in two different worlds,” Sarah says.

Oh Mabel is a boutique brand of bed linen, selling organic and patterned bed sheets and quilted doona covers.

The idea for the range of bed sheets came about, Sarah says, after years of researching and looking for patterned bed sheets for herself.

“I always wondered why this trend had disappeared and why it couldn’t be brought back,” she says.

“I originally thought that I could open a online store selling different brands of bed linen, but after not being able to find any to sell, I thought that I would look into producing my own range.”

Every step of creating Oh Mabel has been on a small scale and Sarah has spent the last couple of years studying design, researching production methods and bed linen trends.

“I chose to produce Oh Mabel using 100 per cent certified organic cotton as I believe that we are over-exposed to products on a daily basis and if I am going to bring a new product to consumers I wanted it to be sustainable and have minimal impact to the environment and the people who created it,” she says.

The cotton used for the sheets and quilts is a long-lasting cotton that softens with continued use and will last for years.

“I love creating bed linen that will hopefully become part of a family and be kept in people’s lives for years and years to come,” she says.
Sarah describes the Oh Mabel style as little bit modern and a little bit vintage.

“Customers have said that the sheets have provided a point of difference in their bedrooms and are always getting comments about the uniqueness and how special they are from their guests,” she says.
