Man seriously burned in car fire

A MAN has suffered serious burns while trying to extinguish a suspicious car fire outside a home in Stirling.

The man in his 40s was injured late on Sunday night while trying to put out a fire in a Ford Laser parked in his driveway on Shenton Crescent.

Police say nearby residents reported hearing a loud bang before the blaze began around 11pm.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze, after arriving to find the man fighting the fire.

The man suffered burns to 25 per cent of his body including his legs, abdomen, chest, head and one arm.

He was treated at the scene and taken by ambulance to Canberra Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The car was badly damaged by fire, smoke and water.

Police are treating the fire as suspicious and AFP Forensics have seized evidence for examination.

Anyone with information about the fire should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or go to act.crimestoppers.com.au.
